Throughout the journey of language learning, culture is one indispensable and essential element in the learning process. To provide a more immersive experience to students with lasting impact, UBC Cantonese invited numerous guest speakers from various areas connected to popular culture including the entertainment industry, literature and theatre, and the academia, etc., to share the many aspects of Cantonese learning and cultural experience with the UBC students.
In 2020 Summer, UBC Cantonese launched “Cantonese through Popular Culture Master class Guest Lecture Series 粵語流行文化大師班講座系列, “open to UBC CNTO 451 students and the public. UBC Cantonese invites guests to share their experience in different industries in an online virtual setting. Guest speakers have been invited to the CNTO 451 Advanced Cantonese through Popular Culture course, including Yi-Hing Ong, Milk Ng, Chris Shum, Hedy Law, Steven U, Mary Lo and Benjamin Au Yeung, who shared insights and compelling personal stories in their expertise with the students. The Cantonese students not only got to hone their language skills through regular course lectures, but they also had a rare peek into the real Cantonese speaking world through the many different lenses of the talented guest speakers.
The upcoming Master Class Guest lecture will be on August 13th, presented by Mr. Benjamin Au Yeung. Guest Benjamin Au Yeung (Ben Sir) is a scholar in Linguistics, a host, actor and former senior lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature. Registration details will be released soon on UBC Cantonese social media handles.
The UBC Cantonese Language Program will continue to invite and involve guests from different areas in the Cantonese world to provide students with hands-on and unique learning experience through popular culture.
